The minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday, 5th February 2013 were submitted and approved.


Matters Arising


Carys Pritchard gave an update in relation to the Teacher Assessment Levels in Religious Education for 2012.


SACRE Membership - request by Joshua Griffiths, British Humanist Association pdf icon PDF 36 KB


Carys Pritchards welcomed and introduced Josh Griffiths from the British Humanist Association to the meeting.


She advised Mr Griffiths of the work of SACRE, the  composition of the SACRE membership and  that the membership being considered today would be as a co-optee and therefore would not have the right to vote.    


Mr Griffiths made a presentation advising on his background within the British Humanist Association and also how he would contribute to the membership of SACRE.  


Following questions presented to Mr Griffiths by the members, Mr Griffiths agreed that he would forward additional information in relation to how the British Humanist Association would help young people in schools to form and explore their own beliefs and develop an understanding of the beliefs.


The members thanked Mr Griffiths for his presentation and he left the meeting.


Following discussion, a vote was taken and it was  RESOLVED that:


·         A humanist representative to join Merthyr Tydfil SACRE as a co-optee would not be in its interest at this present time.


·         Carys Pritchard notify Mr Griffiths of SACRE’s decision.


Examination Update: Religious Studies GCSE Short Course (to be tabled at meeting)


Carys Pritchard updated the members with regard to the ‘All Wales’ figures which were only now available.

Carys Pritchard gave an update in relation to the schools outlined, and advised that she would keep members informed on progress.

Carys Pritchard advised that the Estyn Thematic Report on Religious Education in Secondary Schools will be published next week and it was RESOLVED that:


·         Karen Vokes will circulate copies to members.


·         This item be agendered for the next meeting.

Feedback from WASACRE meeting


An update was given to Members with regard to the WASACRE meeting at Newport on the 22nd March 2013.


Representation at next WASACRE meeting


Carys Prichard informed members that the next WASACRE meeting will be held on 19th June 2013 at Caernarfon, and the Chair advised that he will be attending this meeting.


Executive Voting


Discussion ensued in relation to the nominations for the three positions on the WASACRE Executive Committee.  Carys Pritchard confirmed that there are now eight nominations as Dafydd Treharne had withdrawn. 


Following debate, it was RESOLVED that the following be nominated by Merthyr’s SACRE:


·         Councillor Ernie Galsworthy

·         Rev. Roy Watson

·         Ms Mary Parry


SACRE Development Plan 2012-2015: Review of Progress pdf icon PDF 56 KB


Carys Pritchard updated the members on progress in relation to the Merthyr Tydfil SACRE Development Plan 2012 – 2015.


It was RESOLVED that:


Members receive the report.


Dates of future meetings


The following dates for future meetings were agreed:


·         Tuesday, 8th October 2013 at 3.45 pm

·         Tuesday, 11th February 2014 at 3.45 pm

·         Tuesday, 10th June 2014 at 3.45 pm


All meetings to be held at the Merthyr Council Offices, Civic Centre.

  • RE News Online  -  To consider letter received from University of Wales Trinity Saint David


Members were advised of the Journal, RE News which will now be published online and not in a hard copy version as previously undertaken.


 It was RESOLVED that:


·         SACRE members are supportive of this new scheme.


Any other business as deemed urgent by the Chairman


No other business was discussed.

Agreed Syllabus Standing Conference Meeting


The review of the Agreed Syllabus for Merthyr Tydfil pdf icon PDF 62 KB


Carys Pritchard advised the members with regard to the legal requirement for every local authority to review its agreed syllabus within 5 years of the last review  -  with the current agreed syllabus being implemented in September 2008 in line with national curriculum review changes.  


Members were also advised with regard to the pending assessment and National Curriculum review that is expected to take place from September 2014.


Detailed discussion ensued and it was RESOLVED that:


·         SACRE re-adopt the current agreed syllabus.


·         SACRE review the agreed syllabus and make necessary changes once further details have been received about the assessment and national curriculum review.


·         Carys Pritchard informs the Schools in relation to SACRE’s decision, also enclosing a copy of the current agreed syllabus.
