Presentation from the RE Department at Cyfarthfa High School

Minutes:

Sian Bernard-Henderson, Head of Department for Religious Education at Cyfarthfa High School, made a presentation to the Members in relation to the teaching of religious education at the School, namely:

 

·         Religious understanding of numerous world faiths.

·         Contributing to the Spiritual and Moral Development of the Pupils.

 

She then outlined in detail the Curriculum under Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 and the achievements made by the pupils.

 

The Chair thanked Sian Bernard-Henderson for her very informative presentation.

The minutes of the meeting held on 4th November 2014 were submitted and approved.

Minutes:

Discussion ensued in relation to the current vacancies within the SACRE membership for the forthcoming year, which are under the Teachers Associations and Religious denominations. 

 

With regard to NASUWT, Vicky Thomas advised that we have received two nominations namely, Justine Jones (Twynyrodyn School) and Helen Price (Trelewis School).   Also interest has been expressed by Leanne McCarthy (Cyfarthfa High School) for the NUT teaching union.    It was agreed that there be two representatives on SACRE from NAS/UWT and from NUT as they are the largest teaching unions and the above named persons have been elected on to the Committee.

 

Jane Allman advised all Heads have been e-mailed requesting nominations for these vacancies.   

 

In relation to the Catholic Church vacancy, Jane Allman advised that this will be considered at a future Heads meeting.

 

Detailed discussion ensued and it was RESOLVED that:

 

·         Justine Jones and Helen Price  join Merthyr SACRE as NASUWT members.

·         Leanne McCarthy join Merthyr SACRE as a NUT member.

 

Any additional nominations to be considered at a future meeting.

 

With regard to meetings possibly being held on a Wednesday, further discussions to take place at the next meeting. 

 

Following a query from Rev. Mark Prevett with regard to the specific definitions of the religious denomination as outlined within the membership, it was further RESOLVED that:

 

·         Vicky Thomas to contact Cytun to enquire whether a Free Church vacancy could be sought under the religious denomination membership and will report back at the next meeting.

Minutes:

Vicky Thomas gave an update to members of the attainment at GCSE and A/AS level of Merthyr Tydfil pupils in Religious Studies and Religious Education for 2014.

 

RESOLVED that:

 

SACRE note the examination results 2014, as discussed.

 

The findings be circulated to secondary schools within the County Borough.

WJEC presentation to WASACRE on 26th November 2014: What does the data tell us? pdf icon PDF 67 KB

Minutes:

Vicky Thomas referred members to the WJEC Presentation to WASACRE on the 26th November 2014 and outlined in detail  the specifications for GCSE’s and AS/A levels.

 

RESOLVED that:

Revised Criteria for GCSE and GCE specification: Update pdf icon PDF 62 KB

Minutes:

Vicky Thomas advised that a number of meetings have already been held on proposed changes to specifications and assessment practices for GCSE and GCE and outlined in detail the main proposed changes under discussion. 

 

With regard to proposed models, concern was expressed as not all Schools have been consulted.  

 

RESOLVED that:

 

SACRE note the contents of the report.   Vicky Thomas agreed to raise the question with WJEC on whether all schools would be part of the consultation.

A brief overview was given with regard to the KS3 Year 9 Religious Education Levels for 2013 and 2014 and it was RESOLVED that:

Minutes:

Vicky Thomas gave an update with regard to Estyn’s reporting of Collective Worship together with the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development on School inspections.

Minutes:

Vicky Thomas outlined to Members on the review of assessment and the National Curriculum in Wales, and advised that she would report back to the next meeting on any developments with regard to Phase 2.

Presentation by Father Mark Prevett on his first hand experiences in Rwanda

Minutes:

Mark Prevett spoke in detail with regard to his visits to Rwanda and explained in detail the work that has been carried out to date together with his involvement to help alleviate poverty and also his work with reconciliation projects among communities following the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.

 

The Chair thanked Rev. Mark Prevett for his presentation.

Minutes:

Feedback from WASACRE meeting at Torfaen  -  Vicky Thomas updated Members on the WASACRE meeting on the 26th November 2014.

 

Representation at next WASACRE meeting at Margam, Port Talbot  -  Councillor Ernie Galsworthy will be attending the next WASACRE meeting on the 6th March 2015.

 

Nominations to the WASACRE Executive  -  Following discussion it was RESOLVED that:

Councillor Ernie Galsworthy be nominated by Merthyr SACRE for membership of the Executive Committee of WASACRE.

 

Representation at Summer meeting at Flint  -  Councillor Ernie Galsworthy will be attending the Summer meeting of WASACRE on Thursday, 25th June 2015.
