Stephen Thomas provided a brief summary on the Recycling Rates for Food and Household Waste Report.


The following questions were raised by Members and answered in detail by the Officers:-

 

·         What is the reason for the drop in recycling performance in 2017/18

·         What are the per tonne figures and current cost of disposing of refuse

·         Are figures per tonne or per year

·         How is the other 80% disposed of

·         4.6 – clarity on ‘flat complexes’

·         7.2 – What does second advisory letter say

·         Low participation rates in New Gurnos (low mental health/reading and writing ability.  Could there be more door knocking rather than letters.

·         How much do North Walian Authorities fine their residents

·         4.3 – Are these trolleys value for money and will this scheme be rolled out without further funding.

·         WRAP Cymru – where are we with this/when will the report be received

·         Problems with Community Collections

·         5.6 – 55% food recycling – is there a reluctance to recycle food compared to other materials

·         5.7 - Are many residents using the paint recycling scheme

·         How is the data collected for participation monitoring

·         Councillors engaging in door knock and when will this happen

·         7.2 Have all other options been exhausted before fines issued

·         How much is the fine going to be and will it be one off payment or instalments

·         4.9 Cost per tonne

·         Do we collect hospital food waste

·         Where are we with Unit 20 Recycling Shop and will there be a van available to collect furniture donations

·         Is washing powder container cardboard recyclable

 

The Chair wished to congratulate all the team for being fourth in the UK for recycling.

Paul Davies provided a brief summary to Committee and invited questions.

 

The following questions/topics were raised and answered in detail by the Officers:-

 

·         What is the most common reason for street collections being missed

·         Have you liaised with other Authorities to see how they overcome their problems

·         Transmission/gear box problems on vehicles

·         Altered/larger rounds

·         Drivers still getting out of vehicles

·         7.5 – clarity sought on the benefit of in-cab technology

·         4.2 – clarity sought on results

·         Welsh Government funding

·         Larger/smaller vehicles

·         How to take things forward

·         How much damage has/is being caused to private property
